|Central to this image and to Captiol Reef National Park is a formation
called the Castle. 5 Different layers of sandstone make up the formation
of the castle but at least 7 different layers of sandstone can be seen in this
image which includes the surrounding higher formations. The time period
covered by the different layers of sandstone is over 200 million years.
The purple mountains in the far distance is the 11,000 foot Henry Range which is a beautiful back drop for the dramatic landscapes of Capitol Reef.
All of these different stone layers create a beautiful range of colors which is why the Native Americans called this are of present day Utah "The Land of the Sleeping Rainbow".
